The new year often brings resolutions, goals, and lofty ambitions. But what if, instead of putting pressure on ourselves to achieve something new right away, we start by reflecting on what truly matters to us—our core values? By aligning our goals with our values and using a little neuroscience, we can create authentic, meaningful change that lasts.
Why Core Values Matter
Core values are the guiding principles that define who we are and what we stand for. They act as a compass, helping us navigate life’s decisions with clarity and purpose.
Sometimes, our values feel handed down by family or culture and may not reflect who we are today.
Taking time to reexamine our values can be a surprising and empowering experience.
My personal journey: I recently revisited my values and was pleasantly surprised to see how they evolved. Values like connection, empowerment, and calm emerged as central to how I want to live my life.
The Neuroscience of Goal-Setting and Emotional Alignment
Our brains are pattern-seeking machines, wired to notice what we focus on. This is called the Reticular Activating System (RAS)—a network of neurons that filters information based on what we deem important.
Here’s how it works:
When we visualize achieving a goal, we experience emotions tied to that success (e.g., joy, peace, empowerment).
By identifying and amplifying where those emotions already exist in our lives, we “prime” our brains to notice similar opportunities.
This creates a feedback loop: the more we notice and align with these emotions, the more we naturally move toward our goals.
A Simple Process for Authentic Change
Identify Your Core Values
Choose 3–5 values that resonate with you. These are the principles that make you feel most aligned and fulfilled. (Check out this free PDF to guide you through the process!)
Connect with the Feeling
Ask yourself: How will I feel when I achieve my goal? Use a feelings wheel or brainstorm to name these emotions.
Example:
Value: Connection
Feeling: Warmth, joy, belonging
Find Where You’re Already Aligned
List all the ways you already feel this way in your life. Chances are, you’re already creating moments aligned with your goals and values!
Example:
Value: Connection
Alignment: Weekly calls with friends, quality time with family, and meaningful conversations with clients all amplify belonging, joy, and warmth.
Build Forward with Intention
Now that you know what matters and where it’s showing up, ask yourself:
What small step can I take to amplify this value?
Example:
Action: Plan a monthly dinner with loved ones to deepen connections.
Authentic Change Starts with Awareness
Aligning with your core values and recognizing the emotions tied to your goals helps you create meaningful change. Instead of relying on sheer willpower, you’re working with your brain’s natural tendencies, setting yourself up for success.
